Chapter Nine

ERIN’S OLD VOLKSWAGEN had never taken the narrow winding roads at this speed before and not for the first time, she was thankful that she knew every single turning point, short-cut, and backroad between Kingsmede and the Fitzpatrick farm. Luck was on her side and there was very little traffic on the whole journey.

Little wonder. It was almost six when she finally pulled into the car park outside the winery, next to Roger’s Land Rover and a dark blue hatchback.

A yellow and white Emergency Ambulance was parked with the back door open, facing the fields and vineyards.

Her heart was thumping so fast when she jumped out of the van that she was surprised that the paramedic who came jogging around the corner towards the ambulance could not hear it.

“I’m looking for Amy Fitzpatrick,” she called out as she ran across the tarmac towards him.

“She’s over there, love,” he gestured towards the winery, then disappeared into the ambulance before she had time to thank him.

Erin ran down the path, ducking beneath the low hanging trees that were trying to catch in her hair as she passed. Just as she turned to the other side of the main building, light flooded out from the packaging area. The tall warehouse doors had been opened wide with all the lights turned on.

The reason was blindingly clear.

Marcel Dubois was lying on the ground in between the rows of grapevines, only a few steps away from the path.

She would have recognized Marcel’s short grey hair, neat beard, and characteristic spectacles anywhere. He was facing away from her, with his right arm stretched out in front of him, as though he had tried to block the force of his fall as he went down.

A paramedic in smart overalls was kneeling on the ground next to Marcel, talking to him and reassuring him that he was going to be fine, as he treated the cuts on Marcel’s hands and face.

Erin breathed an enormous sigh of relief when she heard the faintest sound come from Marcel.

Marcel was alive!

Bending over at the waist, Erin sucked in one deep breath and then another. The relief was overwhelming.

As she breathed in slow, calming air, it was immediately obvious that the smell of stale white wine was coming from Marcel’s direction. On the warm dry July evening, Marcel’s jacket and sleeve looked soaked. She scanned the soil under the grapevines and quickly spotted a broken wine bottle lying within hand’s reach of where Marcel was lying. The top had been smashed and the glass pieces scattered as though they had been crushed in the fall.

Erin instantly thought back to when she saw Marcel at Abbotsdown on the day Simon died. He had been drunk and out of control, but she had put that down to shock and grief, not a long-term drinking problem.

Oh, Marcel.

“Erin? Erin, is that you?” A familiar voice asked.

Erin stood up and looked around from side to side until she saw her. Amy was sitting inside the packaging area,
